There is Hope in Colour
Bristol Cathedral hosts conversations on race, justice and belonging
On Saturday 24 October, Bristol Cathedral will host Beloved Community 2026: There Is Hope in Colour.
Centred on Let There Be Light, a proposed stained-glass commission for Bristol Cathedral by artist Joseph Ijoyemi, the event brings together faith leaders, artists, musicians, performers and community voices for a day of conversation, music, poetry, film and storytelling.
Hosted by Unkle Mykel, the programme explores race, justice, identity, heritage and belonging through discussion, creativity and shared experiences. Speakers include Lord Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE, Bishop Bernard A. Morris, Vernon Samuels OLY, Dr Victoria Omotoso and Euella Isis Jackson, with contributions from musicians, poets and artists from Bristol and beyond.
Joseph Ijoyemi said:
“There Is Hope in Colour comes from a collection of sculptures I created during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Born out of the challenges and inequalities faced by Black communities, the work represents resilience, hope and the possibility of changing the narrative for future generations.
This same vision is at the heart of Let There Be Light and the Beloved Community event, bringing people together through art, honest conversation and shared experiences.
My hope is that together we can acknowledge the past, build understanding and help shape a future rooted in hope, unity and belonging.”
Beloved Community is an invitation to listen, learn, share experiences and join the conversation.
Beloved Community 2026: There is Hope in Colour takes place on Saturday 24 October, 10am – 4pm at Bristol Cathedral. Tickets cost £10-£20 and can be booked at HERE.
