Bristol Cathedral to Host Memorial Service for Paul Stephenson

Paul Stephenson OBE (6 May 1937 – 2 November 2024) was a well-known civil rights campaigner and activist. He played a meaningful role in the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott and made significant contributions to community relations and the fight for racial equality in Coventry and London. He will be remembered as a man of courage, principle, and determination, who made friends wherever he went, not only in politics but also in the worlds of music and sport. Paul returned to Bristol in 1992, where he was instrumental in establishing the Bristol Black Archives Partnership and was honoured with the Freedom of the City in 2007.

Bristol Cathedral to Host Memorial Service for Paul Stephenson

Paul returned to Bristol in 1992, where he was instrumental in establishing the Bristol Black Archives Partnership and was honoured with the Freedom of the City in 2007.

This service will celebrate Paul’s legacy and give thanks for his numerous achievements. Speakers will include Lord Paul Boateng and Lord Simon Woolley. The service will be attended civic leaders and dignitaries including His Majesty’s representative, the Lord Lieutenant, Peaches Golding. 

Music will reflect Paul’s broad tastes, featuring both gospel standards and classical choral music.

Representatives of organisations supporting young people, and the black community in Bristol, together with members of the public are invited to register to attend the service, which will be ticketed, via Eventbrite, Paul Stephenson Memorial Service

Paul was a true giant who leaves a lasting legacy in the city of Bristol and beyond. We very much look forward to welcoming Paul’s family, friends and colleagues to this service at Bristol Cathedral.
