The Very Revd Dr David Hoyle, MA

The Dean

The Dean is head of the cathedral foundation, he chairs the Cathedral Chapter, and with the Chapter directs the mission and ministry of the cathedral. He exercises leadership in the cathedral's worship, preaching and prayer. He represents the cathedral in the diocese and is a crucial important point of contact between the city and the diocese. He is the senior priest in the diocese and shares in the Bishop's oversight of the diocese. He is a member of the Bishop's Staff and Diocesan Synod.

Nicola is primarily responsible for worship and liturgy in the Cathedral.  She also has the over-arching responsiblity for the Cathedral choir and our musicians.

The Revd Canon Dr Robert Bull

The Canon Pastor

Robert is responsible for the community life of the cathedral, co-ordinating our shared response to the mission and teaching of the Church. He works with the cathedral staff and many volunteers as we welcome visitors, care for our different congregations and seek to develop the role of the Cathedral and its spiritual identity within the context of a great city. He also has oversight of the important work we do with local schools and young people.

Canon Derek is the Diocesan Canon on Chapter. He is also the Head of Ministry Development for the Diocese of Bristol and a member of the Bishop’s Staff team.

The Revd Canon Professor Martin Gainsborough

Canon Theologian

Canon Martin is responsble for developing Cathedral and Diocese ties with the wider city around issues of national and international concern, including social, economic and environmental justice. Alongisde the Dean of Bristol, Martin shares the responsibility for theological reflection on what it means to look for the signs of the Kingdom in the life of the city and Diocese.  He takes a lead in coordinating theological conversation and is also Professor of Development Politics at the University of Bristol.

Canon Jon Cannon

Keeper of the Fabric

Canon Jon Cannon is the Cathedral's 'Keeper of the Fabric'.  While his academic specialism is medieval church architecture, especially that of the Bristol area, his writing ranges across a range of concerns connected to place, sacredness and religious architecture in England. He is the author of Cathedral: The Great English Cathedrals and the World that Made Them (2008); the Secret Language of Sacred Spaces (2013); Medieval Church Architecture (2015) and other volumes; he also presented BBC4's How to Build a Cathedral. He is in demand as a public speaker and tour leader. Jon is responsible for overseeing the Cathedral's management of its fabric and precincts.

Anthony Brown

Canon

Anthony is a prominent and well-known figure in Bristol. His professional interests involve directorships of TRB Holdings Ltd, TR Brown & Sons Ltd and Folly Farm Centre Ltd. Anthony`s community and charitable interests include Avon Wildlife Trust and the Basil Brown Charitable Trust. He is President of the Colston Research Society and a member of the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England.

Wendy Matthews

Chapter Clerk

Wendy is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Cathedral.  Her responsibilities include finance, fabric, events, HR, health and safety and child protection.

Assistant to the Chapter Clerk

Kerry supports the work of the Chapter Clerk, with particular emphasis on site permissions, health & safety, projects and the cathedral database

Sarah Morris

Executive Assistant

Sarah has several areas of responsibility.  She is the Dean's PA and also coordinates the Cathedral diary and events schedule.  She is the first point of contact for anyone wanting to arrange a special service, event or concert at the Cathedral.  She can also arrange guided tours and provide advice about our volunteer groups.

Naomi Miller

Development Director

Naomi is responsible for fundraising at the Cathedral, taking the lead on donations, gifts in wills and relationships with Trusts, Foundations and Corporate Supporters. She leads the Cathedral's communications group and is heavily involved with creating new links and partnerships with other attractions and organisations across the city and region.

Master of the Choristers & Organist

Mark is responsible for the training, direction, and management of the Cathedral’s music, notably the Cathedral Choirs.

Music Administrator

Tim supports the musical and liturgical work of the Cathedral, and is the main point of contact for the Cathedral Choir and for visiting choirs.

Paul Walton

Assistant Organist and Director of the Cathedral Consort

Paul Walton accompanies and assists in the training of the Cathedral Choir, gives regular recitals, and directs the Cathedral Consort and the Cathedral Chamber Choir. More information on Paul can be found on his website.

Glynn Usher

Head Verger

Glynn is responsible for the Verger team who oversee the day-to-day running of the Cathedral's services, concerts and events. Their responsibilities include; security, first aid, health and safety and the general maintenance and management of the Cathedral building and precincts.
