The Advent Procession

  • Sun 29 November | 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Bristol Cathedral  - College Green, Bristol

Begin Advent with one of Bristol Cathedral’s most powerful and atmospheric services.

Beginning in complete darkness, the Advent Procession follows a journey from darkness into light. The voices of the Cathedral Choir are first heard from the far end of the Cathedral before the procession begins. As the choir and vergers move through the building, candles are gradually lit throughout the congregation, transforming the Cathedral with light. Through music, scripture and prayer, the service unfolds the story of God’s promises and the hope of Christ’s coming into the world.

Advent is the season when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. It is a time of waiting, reflection and expectation, as we remember God’s promises, welcome Christ’s presence in our lives today and look forward with hope to his coming again.

Rich in symbolism, music and beauty, the Advent Procession marks the beginning of the Church’s year and the start of the journey towards Christmas. Whether you come every year or are experiencing it for the first time, it offers a meaningful way to step away from the busyness of December and enter the season of Advent.
