South West Silents return to Bristol Cathedral for DAS CABINET DES DR CALIGARI, Robert Wiene's classic of German Expressionism, with live organ improvisation from David Bednall.
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920 / The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
Director: Robert Wiene
Starring: Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Lil Dagover
77 minutes / U / Germany
At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) presents the somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt), who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding… bidding which would change the lives of many in the town forever.
Incalculably influential, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror, film noir, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). But this diabolical tale nevertheless stands alone, as mesmerising as ever and would symbolise as one of the key films for German Expressionist cinema.
As part of a new season of silent film screenings celebrating 100 years since the beginning of the 1920s, the final decade of the silent era, South West Silents and Bristol Cathedral are proud to present this unique screening of one of the landmark titles in cinema history for the film’s 100th anniversary.
With live organ improvisation from David Bednall.
Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions) and are available from getawriggleon.com.
Doors open at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start.
