Cathedral welcomes new Canon Theologian
Bristol Cathedral is proud to welcome The Revd Professor Martin Gainsborough as Canon Theologian and a member of Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body. Revd Gainsborough was installed at a special service on Sunday 24 April in the presence of the Bishop of Bristol.
In his new Cathedral role, Canon Martin will be tasked with developing ties between the Cathedral, the Diocese and the wider city, with a focus on issues of national and international concern, including social, economic and environmental justice. Along with the Dean of Bristol, Martin shares the responsibility for theological reflection and takes a lead in coordinating theological conversation across the city and the Diocese. Martin is also Professor of Development Politics at the University of Bristol.
"I am really look forward to starting my new role as Canon Theologian. I have attended Morning Prayer at the Cathedral for many years and have always felt an affinity for the place so it is great to be embarking on this new 'public theology' role. It is really important that the Church engages with the wider city on issues of national and international concern, particularly with those who think they have no reason to talk to the Church. I look forward to working with others at the Cathedral and in the wider Diocese to cross boundaries and think about how we might heal some of the divisions in the city."
