New Canon Treasurer appointed

The Dean and Chapter of Bristol Cathedral is very pleased to announce that Dr John Savage CBE will become the new Canon Treasurer from March 2014. His appointment follows the retirement of Canon Richard Outhwaite who will stand down in February 2014. John will be formally installed at Choral Evensong on Sunday 23 February at 3.30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

John is the Executive Chairman of Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative and Chairman of University Hospitals Bristol.

John has led his organisation in the promotion of partnership between government, local government and the private sector in order to promote the position of Bristol and its neighbouring communities as a vibrant and vital European city region in the twenty-first century.

He is a committed believer in the importance of the National Health Service and the concepts of the Welfare State and is also passionately concerned about the failure of the British educational system to produce opportunities for large swathes of underprivileged young people from successive generations. He emphasises the strong links between ill health and disadvantage.

He is Chairman of Learning Partnership West and a member of many other boards.

He was Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council for the South West throughout its existence and a board member of the Regional Development Agency.

John was High Sheriff of Bristol for 2002/3, was awarded the CBE for services to Business and Regeneration in the 2006 New Year Honours List and received Honorary Doctorates from both Bristol Universities.

His other interests and motivations include an unshaken Christian belief, Ocean Sailing, Cycling, Hill Walking, History, Music and the Arts.
