SUMMARY:Bristol's Grenfell Memorial Panel
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Cathedral is honoured to display Bristol Star Stitchers’ contribution to the Grenfell Memorial Quilt\, a moving tribute to all those affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster. \nBristol Star Stitchers have created a 12ft x 12ft panel honours the 72 people who died in the fire on 14 June 2017\, as well as those who survived\, were injured\, or lost their homes. It forms part of a nationwide memorial project inspired by a call from relatives and friends of those affected\, with around 90 panels created by groups across the UK ahead of the disaster’s tenth anniversary in 2027. \nThe Bristol panel is also a story of community. Made from recycled fabrics collected from charity shops and other sources\, it brought together more than 30 people of all ages and levels of sewing experience. What began as small gatherings in people’s homes grew into a shared endeavour at the Vassall Community Hub in Fishponds\, where friendships were formed and skills\, stories and countless hours were shared. \nAt the heart of the panel are 72 embroidered stars\, each bearing the name and age of a person who died. Families and loved ones are stitched close together\, reflecting the lives\, relationships and communities behind the headlines. Flowers and foliage symbolise hope and renewal\, while the tower itself stands as a reminder that those affected must not be forgotten. \nVisitors are warmly invited to spend time with this remarkable artwork\, remember those who were lost\, and reflect on the power of communities coming together in solidarity. \n\nFree admission. DESCRIPTION:All God’s Children is an exhibition in Bristol Cathedral that explores the impact of the slave economy on Cathedral life\, past and present. \nAll God’s Children is part of the Cathedral’s work to understand its links with the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Research that informed the exhibition discovered that between 1670 and 1900\, roughly 1\,000 people were buried or memorialised in the Cathedral and its grounds. Around 200 (20%) of them had a close connection to the slavery-based economy. \nWe hope that the exhibition will inform a wide-ranging conversation about the stories we tell in the Cathedral\, the ways in which we can repair and restore damaged relationships and the ways we can work together for a better future for everyone. \nWhy is Bristol Cathedral putting on this exhibition? \nThe Bible teaches us in many places that each and every person is loved and valued by God. We are told that when one person suffers\, we all suffer. Yet Christians have so often failed to behave as if this is what they believe. For hundreds of years many of the people who gathered in this Cathedral enslaved\, bought and sold their sisters and brothers of colour. They exploited\, raped and murdered them and the exploiters did not see their actions as being incompatible with their Christian faith. \nWe recognise that neither the injustices of the past nor the impact of racism in the present have been properly acknowledged in the Cathedral. We seek to welcome to everyone but we know that it cannot be truly welcoming until the story of the painful legacy of slavery is told within these walls and until the contribution of all our sisters and brothers to our shared life is recognised. \nThis exhibition presents the first findings of a research project into Bristol Cathedral’s connections with slavery as revealed through its memorials and grave-markers. We hope that it will help to inform a wide-ranging conversation about the stories we tell\, the ways in which we can repair and restore damaged relationships and the ways we can work together for a better future for everyone. \n  \nThe exhibition is available whenever the Cathedral is open

We are told that when one person suffers\, we all suffer. Yet Christians have so often failed to behave as if this is what they believe. For hundreds of years many of the people who gathered in this Cathedral enslaved\, bought and sold their sisters and brothers of colour. They exploited\, raped and murdered them and the exploiters did not see their actions as being incompatible with their Christian faith. \nWe recognise that neither the injustices of the past nor the impact of racism in the present have been properly acknowledged in the Cathedral. We seek to welcome to everyone but we know that it cannot be truly welcoming until the story of the painful legacy of slavery is told within these walls and until the contribution of all our sisters and brothers to our shared life is recognised. \nThis exhibition presents the first findings of a research project into Bristol Cathedral’s connections with slavery as revealed through its memorials and grave-markers. DESCRIPTION:All God’s Children is an exhibition in Bristol Cathedral that explores the impact of the slave economy on Cathedral life\, past and present. \nAll God’s Children is part of the Cathedral’s work to understand its links with the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. Research that informed the exhibition discovered that between 1670 and 1900\, roughly 1\,000 people were buried or memorialised in the Cathedral and its grounds. Around 200 (20%) of them had a close connection to the slavery-based economy. \nWe hope that the exhibition will inform a wide-ranging conversation about the stories we tell in the Cathedral\, the ways in which we can repair and restore damaged relationships and the ways we can work together for a better future for everyone. \nWhy is Bristol Cathedral putting on this exhibition? \nThe Bible teaches us in many places that each and every person is loved and valued by God.
